THE MALTHOUSE FALCON is set in a world where science is a poor relation to magic. It is closer than you think…

Think about it…our folklore is full of sprites (elves, dwarves, goblins etc.) but nobody has actually seen any of them for centuries (unless you’re a pair of Edwardian sisters with a box camera).
This is the world that the sprites escaped to when they felt oppressed by the arrival of the Roman religion and were made uneasy by the increased use of iron in our world.
With the onset of an industrial revolution; humans and sprites are leaving the countryside to work in the new industries in the great city of Thursday Market. For the sprites it is a greater sacrifice as they have to give up their magical abilities through a process called ironisation (a. because being in proximity to iron makes them nauseous and thereby unfit to work and b. the witches who rule don’t want uncontrolled magic in their city). Ironisation leaches the magic out of a sprite and results in them becoming a taller, larger (more human) i-sprite.
Having unwittingly averted a national crisis, our hero The Lepping Stones Boggart has made a powerful enemy and an assassin is dispatched to exact revenge. Surviving two attempts on his life, he takes up the offer of an invitation to head for the anonymity of the big city.
Thanks to his unerring ability to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, our hero re-invents himself as Humphrey Boggart, Thursday Market’s number one (only) private detective. The trouble is that Humphrey finds making enemies a lot easier than solving mysteries
